Tires Screech on the Runway
Sarah heard the tires screech before she saw anything. A sedan stopped sideways across the runway, and a lieutenant stumbled from the rear seat with blood covering his sleeve.
He called out for Colonel Hale, and Sarah rushed toward him even as Marcus ordered her back.
The lieutenant held out a classified folder with shaking hands. "They killed everyone else," he said. When Sarah asked who, he stared and answered only, "The people who want that."
Marcus demanded the folder, Sarah refused, and the lieutenant collapsed as medics rushed forward.

The Vanished Destroyer
Inside the folder, Sarah found satellite photographs showing an American destroyer operating without identification. The vessel had vanished from official tracking three weeks earlier, according to the documents.
Beneath the photographs was a name that stopped her cold — her husband's name, listed with the status: COMMANDING OFFICER. "My husband is commanding a ship?" Sarah asked Marcus.
He closed his eyes and said, "I hoped you would never learn this." When she accused him of knowing her husband was alive, he admitted only, "I knew there were rumors."

The Scar on the Wrong Side
Before Sarah could confront Marcus further, the lieutenant regained consciousness with a chilling correction: "He's not commanding it." Kneeling beside him, Sarah asked why the document listed him. His answer was simple — somebody is using his identity.
He handed her a second photograph. The man aboard the destroyer looked exactly like David Hale, but Sarah noticed one detail immediately. A scar was on the wrong side of his face. "That isn't my husband," she said.
Marcus examined the photograph, his expression hardening. After a long pause, he whispered, "That's his brother." Sarah stared at him. "David never had a brother." Marcus replied, "Not one you were allowed to know about."
