An Interruption in the Chandelier Light
The ballroom glowed in warm gold and white, crystal chandeliers blazing over polished wood and tall white flowers.
A woman in a flowing magenta satin gown walked through the grandeur, her back to the camera, when a small figure in a worn, torn grey jacket hurried after her across the floor.
It was an impossible contrast — silk and splendor ahead, dust and frayed fabric behind. The boy did not stop until he stood face-to-face with her, clutching a small dark drawstring pouch in his hands.

"Are You Isabelle Vance?"
"Excuse me. Are you Isabelle Vance?" the boy, Leo, asked, his voice urgent and careful. Surprised to be called by name in the middle of the party, the woman turned to him.
"Yes. Who are you?" Isabelle replied, her eyes narrowing in confusion.
She bent her gaze down to meet his, taking in his messy hair and travel-worn clothes.
For a moment, the music and glitter of the hall seemed to fall away as the two strangers stared at each other under the chandelier.

Half a Keepsake From the Past
Then Leo reached into his pouch and lifted out a gleaming oval gold locket. He held it up toward her, the delicate chain and antique frame catching the light. Isabelle's expression shifted instantly from curiosity to shock.
Her hand flew to her chest as she stared at the keepsake. "Where did you find this?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Leo looked up at her with steady sincerity and answered simply, "My mother told me to give it to you."
