The Wrong Seat

Crystal chandeliers blazed over the head table as Evelyn Carter sat quiet in navy silk, hands folded. She had not touched her wine when a shadow in decorated green fell hard across her plate.

Colonel Dachice stood rigid with medals gleaming, her voice clipped with absolute certainty. She stared down at the calm civilian and declared that the head table was for senior command only.

Orders at the Table

Evelyn looked up once, polite but unmoved, and said the seat had been reserved for her. Dachice leaned closer with stars flashing and ordered her to stand without checking the program.

A heavy beat fell as generals watched and pretended not to watch the quiet standoff unfold. Evelyn rose without argument, answered softly with Of course General, and walked away slowly.

The Guest of Honor

Dachice smoothed her napkin and reached for her glass, certain the matter was finally settled. Then a white-jacketed aide appeared at her elbow and whispered for the secretary to be announced.

He held out the printed program where three bold lines burned brighter than the chandeliers above. Guest of Honor Secretary of the Army Evelyn Carter stared back and drained the color from Dachice.

Silence Falls Hard

Across the table a four-star general set down his fork as sudden silence swallowed the grand ballroom. His voice cut sharp through the tension as he demanded if she knew who she had just removed.

Dachice froze with wide disbelieving eyes as the camera closed in on her collapsing composure. Evelyn had not left the room but stood waiting by the far wall while every stare turned toward her.
