Lunchroom Ignites
The metal tray hit the tile with a scream, scattering rice like shrapnel across the mess hall floor. Carter stayed seated, spine straight and eyes cold, while a paper cup stopped at Tanner's boot.
Tanner towered over her table, uniform starched and jaw locked, his shadow swallowing her lunch. The cafeteria hummed with low voices, but forks froze mid-air as soldiers sensed the coming storm.
Face to Face
He leaned in close and ordered her to stand, his whisper sharper than any shout across the room. She lifted her gaze slowly and asked if such force was truly necessary, Captain Tanner.

They rose eye to eye, two uniforms mirroring each other yet divided by contempt and pride. His mouth twitched with disdain as he sneered that her uniform would never make her special in this unit.
Power Walks In
Heavy boots echoed as the far doors swung open and a silver-haired general entered in dress blues. Every bench scraped violently as a hundred soldiers snapped to rigid attention at once.

He marched straight down the center aisle, ribbons blazing, eyes fixed on the spilled food standoff. Tanner squared his shoulders with smug relief, certain that backup had finally arrived.
Salute Reverses Fate
The general stopped three feet away and raised a crisp, precise salute not to Tanner but to Carter. She returned it sharply while Tanner's widening eyes betrayed his collapsing confidence.
His low voice cut the silence as he said quietly, Captain Tanner, we need to talk right now. Behind them a hundred soldiers watched breathlessly, pretending not to stare at history unfolding.
