"Stop Right There"
The gravel crunched under her boots as Dr. Carter crossed the concrete yard with the confidence of someone who had already been cleared to be there. Her worn leather bag hung on her shoulder, her pace steady and unhurried. That confidence was exactly what stopped her cold.
Major Nolan stepped directly into her path in full camouflage, jaw locked and voice sharp. "Civilians don't walk into my facility like they own the place," he demanded, calling for identification now.
When she tilted her head, almost amused, and said her name should already be on his clearance list, he snorted and eyed the bag like it was a joke.

The Bag, the Warning and the Black SUV
The confrontation escalated fast in the open yard. Nolan told her that bag didn't make her important and to turn around before he had security walk her out, while a younger soldier behind him tried not to smile.
Carter kept her voice low, warning him that he might want to check who was arriving behind him first.
Nolan refused to turn, insisting that around here people follow his orders and that she needed to learn how the base works. Behind him, a black SUV rolled to a stop on the gravel and the rear door opened.
As boots hit the ground, Carter slipped her fingers inside her bag and produced an envelope with a small white seal. "I think you're about to learn that lesson yourself."

"She Reports Directly to Me"
A voice like iron cut across the yard: "Major Nolan. Step away from Dr. Carter." It was the general in full dress uniform, medals catching the light, his rank instantly changing the air.
Nolan's face emptied as the senior officer made it clear that Carter reported directly to him.
Silence stretched across the concrete. Carter's mouth curved just enough as she asked, "Still want security to escort me out?" The general's eyes moved from Nolan's frozen stance to the envelope in her hand, his expression tightening.
"Doctor," he said quietly. "We don't have much time." Whatever was inside that sealed envelope had already started a fight no one else on the base knew they were in.
