The Cold Welcome

Sunlight sliced through the Fort Campbell hangar as Specialist Sarah Martinez stepped inside carrying her heavy deployment duffle. Across the tarmac, Sergeant Thompson immediately smirked, nudging his men while pointing directly at the newcomer.

"Look at her, she's already shaking," Thompson sneered loudly, prompting mocking chuckles from the surrounding squad. Sarah did not break stride or blink, marching toward the processing station with icy, unyielding composure.

The Check-In Desk

Arriving at the intake desk, Sarah dropped her pack and stood straight before Officer Clokk. The stern-faced intake officer adjusted her glasses and demanded standard identification details with practiced detachment.

"Specialist, Medical," Sarah replied evenly, handing over her official personnel dossier. Clokk flipped open the folder expecting an ordinary transfer report, but her expression rapidly shifted from apathy to disbelief.

A Staggering Record

"There has to be a mistake," Clokk murmured, scanning the rows of commendations stamped across the combat log. Five Purple Hearts and five grueling frontline campaigns were meticulously recorded under the medic's name.

When Clokk asked how she could endure such trauma and still stand tall, Sarah offered only quiet resolve. "I never said I came back whole, ma'am," Sarah answered softly. "Only that I am still standing here."

The Tables Turned

Still oblivious to the dossier, Thompson strutted over to make another condescending jab about her heavy gear. Officer Clokk rose to her feet instantly, cutting the arrogant sergeant off with a thunderous reprimand.

"At ease, Sergeant—you are looking at a veteran of five combat campaigns," Clokk barked across the depot. The hangar fell dead silent as the humbled sergeant snapped to attention, stammering an immediate apology.
