Stopped in the Hallway: A Grandfather, a Crying Girl, and the Doctor With Bad News

Running Through the Hospital Doors

Marco rushed through the automatic doors of the hospital with Sofia clutched tightly in his arms. The little blonde girl was crying desperately, her face buried against his coat as she clung to him for comfort.

The first close moments show just how frightened they both are. Tears stream down Sofia's reddened cheeks as she grips his jacket and pleads, "Dad... don't leave me!"

Marco tries to soothe her, but his own eyes are red and full of fear. They have come for news they have waited, prayed and hoped for.

"Stop The Entrance"

Suddenly, a doctor appears at the end of the corridor. It is Giovanni, 45, in a white coat with an extremely serious expression. He walks quickly toward them without looking away, his focus locked on the pair.

As Marco sees him approach, he holds Sofia even tighter. Giovanni stops directly in front of them and slowly raises a hand. "Stop the entrance," he says.

Marco freezes in place, staring at the doctor's grave face and fearing the worst, while Sofia continues to cry, clinging to her grandfather.

A Question No One Is Ready to Answer

Marco glances down for an instant at the doctor's badge, then back up at him. "Doctor..." he says. Giovanni does not answer right away, and that brief silence feels like an eternity.

Marco's breathing grows heavier. Terrified to ask but desperate for the truth, he whispers with a trembling voice, "Giulia... our child?"

Giovanni lowers his gaze for a few seconds as Sofia slowly lifts her tear-wet face to look at him, waiting for an answer.

The hallway seems to fall suddenly silent. Giovanni takes a step toward them, and neither Marco nor Sofia is prepared for what they are about to hear.

As the doctor finally begins to speak, Marco realizes the situation is far more complicated than he imagined, with the truth about Giulia and what really happened that night still to come.
